  2. Pass the phone

Each player taps to see their card, hides it again, and hands the phone on.

FAQ

The imposter game, explained

How do you play the imposter game?

Everyone gets the same secret word except the imposter, who only learns that they are the imposter. Go round the group in turn, each giving a one-word clue that shows you know the word without giving it away: the later you go, the more clues you have heard, which is the imposter's best chance to blend in. Then vote on who you think the imposter is. Catch them and the group wins, unless the imposter can then guess the word. If the imposter isn’t caught, they win.

How many players do you need?

At least 3, and 4 or more make a better game. This page deals for 3 to 20 players sharing one phone. A bigger group is quicker with every card on its own phone.

How many imposters should there be?

Leave it on Auto and the generator deals one imposter for every 8 players, rounded up: 1 for 3 to 8 players, 2 for 9 to 16 players and 3 for 17 to 20 players. You can pick up to 3 yourself, as long as they are no more than a third of the group, so the crew always outnumbers the imposters.

What does the imposter see?

A card that says “You’re the imposter”. With the hint on, it also shows the word’s category, the same category every other card shows, so the imposter has something to bluff with. Turn the hint off for a harder game: the imposter has nothing but the other players’ clues.

Where do the words come from?

From Decka’s own word bank: 330 words in 11 everyday categories (food, animals, places, jobs, household objects, sports, nature, transport, music, school and office), plus a holiday pack (Christmas, winter and New Year) that you tick yourself. Every word is a concrete thing that takes a one-word clue, and none is a brand. A word won’t come up twice until every word in your categories has been dealt.

Do I need an app or an account?

No. It runs on this page, on one phone, with no signup. The cards are dealt in your browser: nothing about them is sent anywhere, and nothing is saved, so refreshing the page starts a new game.

Can everyone play on their own phone instead?

Yes, with Decka’s live imposter game. Players join from their own phones with a code, with no app and no account. Each phone gets its own card, everyone types a one-word clue, the big screen shows the clue wall, and the room votes before the reveal.
