Play the imposter game online with the whole room. Everyone gets the secret word on their own phone except the imposter, each one-word clue goes up on the big screen as it is sent, and the room votes out the bluffer.

How it works
- 01
Everyone gets a card on their own phone
Every phone shows the secret word except the imposters', which show at most its category. The big screen never shows the word while the round is being played.
- 02
One word each, on the big screen
With up to 10 players the clues go round one at a time, 20 seconds a turn, and a bigger room writes all at once. Each clue lands on the big screen the moment it is sent, so the imposter bluffs from the clues before theirs, and the room talks about whose clue does not quite fit.
- 03
The room votes, and the imposters are revealed
Everyone votes on their phone for the player they suspect. The big screen counts the votes and turns the imposters' cards over, and a caught imposter gets one guess at the word before the screen shows it.
Why the imposter game works better on every phone
The imposter game is usually played by passing one phone around a circle. It works for six friends on a sofa. In a room of thirty it falls apart: the phone takes five minutes to get round, somebody glimpses a card on the way, and half the room never hears the clues from the far end.
Here every player holds their own card. Each clue lands on the big screen as it is sent, so the whole room reads the same clues in the same order, and the imposter has to bluff from them in plain sight. Up to 10 players, the clues go round one at a time in a random order. A bigger room writes all at once, each player on a clock of their own, so thirty people are not waiting through thirty turns. The vote is private on each phone and the screen shows only the count, so nobody has to point at a colleague in front of the room.
Nothing secret ever reaches the big screen or the host’s phone before the reveal. The word and the imposters are dealt by the server, one card per phone, and the host can play with everyone else. For a quick game at a table, the free imposter game generator deals on one phone you pass round.
FAQ
The imposter game, explained
How do you play the imposter game?
Everyone joins on their phone. Each round, every player is dealt the same secret word, except the imposters, who are told only that they are the imposter. Each player gives a one-word clue that shows they know the word without giving it away, and each clue goes up on the big screen as it is sent. Then the room talks, everyone votes for the player they think is bluffing, and the imposters are revealed.
Can you play the imposter game online?
Yes. Everyone scans a QR code or opens a link and plays in their phone's browser, with no app and no account. The cards, the clues and the votes all happen on the phones, and the big screen shows the clue wall and the reveal to the whole room. It works in one room or on a video call, as long as everyone can see the shared screen.
How many imposters are there?
On Auto, one imposter for every 8 players, rounded up. You can also choose from 1 to 5. Whatever you choose, a room never gets more than a third of its players as imposters. Everyone is told how many imposters there are, but never who they are.
What does the imposter see?
The imposter's card says they are the imposter and, by default, shows the word's category, so they have something to bluff with. You can switch the hint off for a harder game. Every card on every phone looks the same from across the table, so a neighbour cannot tell who was dealt which.
How are the votes counted?
Everyone votes for one player, and nobody can vote for themselves. Votes can change until the clock runs out or everyone has voted. The big screen shows how many votes each player got, never who voted for whom. If the top-voted player is an imposter, the room caught them. A tie at the top catches nobody.
Can the imposter still win?
Yes, in two ways. An imposter who is not caught scores 200 points. A caught imposter gets one guess at the word, with 30 seconds to make it, and a right guess steals the round for 150 points. If the guess is nearly right, you can rule it close enough from your phone.
How does scoring work?
A player who votes for an imposter scores 50. When the room catches an imposter and the last guess misses, every player who held the word scores 100. An imposter who escapes scores 200, and one who guesses the word scores 150. The leaderboard runs across every round, with a new word and new imposters each time.
Where do the words come from?
A built-in bank of 360 words in 12 categories, from food and animals to the office, all chosen to take a one-word clue. The holiday pack (christmas, winter and new year) plays only when you tick it. You can also type your own list of up to 200 words. Your own list is never sent to the players' phones, so nobody can read the next word off it.
Can the host play too?
Yes. The big screen and your remote never see the word or who the imposters are until the vote is over, so the host holds no secret. Join on your phone like everyone else and play.
How long does a game take?
The default is 3 rounds. In each, up to 10 players give their clues in turns of up to 20 seconds, and a bigger room writes all at once, within 60 seconds. Then come 60 seconds of discussion and 40 seconds to vote, which ends early when everyone has voted. You can set from 1 to 10 rounds, skip a turn or the discussion, end the vote early or add 15 seconds from your phone.
How many people can play?
At least 3, and 4 or more is better. Past 40 players the clue wall gets long and rounds slow down, so the lobby warns you, but it never turns anyone away. The Free plan supports up to 50 participants per live activity, Pro raises that to 150, and Badass supports up to 300.
Do players need an app or an account?
No. They scan a QR code or open a link and play in their phone's browser. Nothing to install and no sign-up.
