The reasons cluster, and each one points somewhere different.

The polling felt thin

Slido's polls are deliberately simple, and its quiz is multiple choice only. That is a feature when the questions are the event and a limitation when the polls are. If you wanted games, team activities or quiz formats beyond multiple choice, you were asking more of the polls than they are built for.

The per-event cap

Free plans in this category cap different things. Slido's shape is per event, which suits an occasional all-hands and works against a weekly meeting series.

It is another window

Even with the add-ins, the activity runs in Slido's interface next to your deck rather than in it. For a long talk with several interactive moments, that adds up.

What Slido is genuinely good at

If one of these is why you use it, be careful. Some of this list is worse at them rather than better.

Webex, first-party. Cisco owns both Slido and Webex, so that path is built rather than integrated, and it shows in how little setup it needs.
Full surveys. A set of polls delivered in one go, with results updating live as people work through them. That is a genuinely different thing from asking one question at a time, and Slido does it well.
Running at event scale. Screening and dismissing questions while a session is live is hard, and Slido has spent years on the operations side of large rooms.
A Microsoft Teams app that behaves itself, for organisations that run their meetings there.

Moderation happens from the presenter remote while you are talking, so surfacing or dismissing a question does not mean opening another window. The presentation itself is built in a real editor with a freeform canvas and real-time collaboration rather than a form that produces slide-shaped output. Decka has 56 activities in total, from Q&A and polls to drawing games, team builders and ready-made classroom lessons. Each one runs inside PowerPoint and Google Slides as well as Decka, with these exceptions: classroom lessons in PowerPoint and Decka, Bingo in Decka only. Several have no equivalent among the other tools here.

Question tools and polling tools are not the same product

This is worth being precise about, because it explains most of the disappointment people report after switching. A questions tool's hard problem is ranking and moderation. Hundreds of people type, most of it is duplicates or noise, and the job is getting the good one in front of the speaker without a human reading everything. A polling tool's hard problem is expression. Give a room a way to say something more interesting than picking one of four options, then put it on a screen so the shape of the answer reads at a glance.

Products that lead with one treat the other as a feature. That is not laziness. The two jobs pull the interface in opposite directions, and a tool that did both perfectly would be cluttered for whichever session you are actually running. So the useful question is not which product is better. It is which of those two problems is yours today.

If the honest answer is both, in the same hour, then the thing to optimise is not the tool at all. It is how many times you have to leave your deck to use it.

Slido if the audience's questions are the point, because it ranks them by upvote and gives you real moderation for a large room. Mentimeter if your questions are the point, because it has many more question formats and a template library that saves preparation time. Decka if both happen in the same hour and you would rather not leave your slides for either.

Is there a free Slido alternative?

Several, but their free plans cap different things, and which cap hurts depends entirely on your meeting pattern. A weekly fifteen-person stand-up and a quarterly four-hundred-person all-hands are stopped by different limits, so read the ceiling rather than the headline.

What can I use for audience questions inside PowerPoint?

Decka runs the question queue as a slide through its PowerPoint add-in, so questions appear in the deck rather than in a second window, and you moderate them from the presenter remote. Slido also offers a PowerPoint add-in, which puts its panel beside your slides. The difference is whether the activity is in the presentation or next to it.

Do I need Webex or Teams to use Slido?

No, it works from a browser on its own. The Webex path matters because Cisco owns both products, so it needs less setup than any third-party equivalent. If your organisation does not run on Webex, that advantage does not apply to you and should not weigh on the decision.
